Understanding Range: Magnification Settings to Look For
The most common magnification settings on rifles are 10x and 20x, but some manufacturers make specialty scopes with magnification as high as 100x. Magnification levels can be adjusted using screws on the scope lens, but in many cases, these adjustments are limited by the body of the scope itself.
This question leads us right into a topic called magnification. As we’ve mentioned before, magnification refers to the size of the image that is being viewed. A higher power (which is measured in “power” units) creates an image that is smaller. The smallest image is 1x. The largest magnification is 8x which is also known as the highest power. The lowest magnification is the lowest power which is commonly referred to as the lowest power. A typical magnification is 2x.
In a very general sense, the quality of a long-range optics’ magnification greatly varies, depending on the caliber of bullet or cartridge used. Longer-range scopes can significantly magnify their sight picture, granting you the ability to zoom in and clearly see a target many thousands of yards away.
Long-range accuracy is one of the most sought after by sportsmen, hunters and hobbyists. Long-range shooting can be done using a variety of firearms, such as long-range rifles and handguns, but some of the most popular and most expensive of all include sniper scopes.
It is possible to magnify a camera view of up to 20x. However, this can make it hard to keep an eye on things that are far away. You will need a powerful, stable tripod, a lens with wide angle and telephoto capabilities, and a steady hand to prevent blurred images.
What Makes a Sniper Scope Worthwhile?
There are tons of scopes out there, so knowing which one will be perfect for your needs or rifle is a daunting task. You need to consider all of the major attributes when making your choice.
You want a durable scope that will last, but not be so heavy as to make you miss shots. Choosing a scope is an extremely important part of hunting, because you might have to take a shot from an awkward position.
The cost of buying the equipment to begin a project can be daunting. With these prices you can do the research yourself or have someone do it for you.
At a distance, optics must gather all of the light possible to present you with a bright and clear sight picture at their higher magnification powers. You want to make sure that the lens is coated with multi-coating technology, or even more, so you can get the best performance from your optic at a distance.
The lenses we’ve chosen are a good choice for every day, so whether you need something for a party or an interview, the following list will be useful in helping you find what you need.
Windage and Elevation Turret Quality
You’ll want to select scopes that have good windage and elevation adjustment turrets. Having turrets that are easy to adjust or that offer precise adjustment increments are critical if you need to compensate for either of the above two variables when landing a long-distance shot.
To minimize or mitigate the impact of parallax when shooting from long distances, you should look at the scopes we’ve selected for you. They all have parallax turrets and/or adjustable objectives, so you can adjust your scope’s settings to best fit your needs.
First or Second Focal Plane
Finally, consider whether a given scope has a reticle on the first or second focal plane. The first focal plane reticle will become larger as you increase magnification, and smaller as you decrease magnification.
Second focal plane reticles are designed to help with focus accuracy by allowing the user to easily determine the actual distance of the subject being viewed from the lens, no matter what zoom setting is chosen.
There is no “right or wrong” choice when hunting. However, you might prefer one model over another based on your preferences, or perhaps you already own a particular type of scope. You can use the scope review to determine if there is a scope for you.
What to Look For in a Sniper Scope?
The way you do things in life is by making long-term decisions. You can’t get to where you want to go in this world by being cheap. Make a plan and work towards your goals.
At the long-range, it’s unlikely that you’ll get much accuracy with inexpensive optics. Quality long-range optics aren’t cheap, so plan to spend a few hundred dollars for a rifle scope that’ll help you hit what you’re aiming at.
A scope is a tool used to increase the distance at which one can accurately aim. One should be aware of what kind of scope they want, in terms of magnification and features like illuminated reticles, aiming points, and so on.
This feature helps you shoot longer and faster exposures in low light and will correct for the optical error called parallax. It can be found on most cameras with a tripod mount.
The ideal scope has an eye-relief of at least two inches. The further away you look, the more light you have to see what you are shooting.
What Does A Good Rimfire Scope For Squirrel Hunting Need?
Squirrel hunting requires some special considerations. You will be using a rifle or shotgun that fires projectiles. For accuracy, the barrel should be fairly short (12 inches or less) and the barrel should be properly balanced for your shooting style. The sights and scope will be used primarily for distance shooting rather than for precision work. A scope can be used if you prefer it to traditional iron sights.
The Douglas squirrel in California has a relatively long tail that helps with balance while climbing trees. Their tails are longer than any other squirrels. They like to live in Douglas fir trees as opposed to the Redwood trees that are common to the northern half of the US.
You can find centerfire rifles in places where you can shoot a 200-yard or longer shot. At 300 yards or further, you are also entering the realm of the centerfire rifle, which means you’re shooting a rifle that’s designed for the middle of the target. You can find some of our favorite long-range centerfire rifles in our roundup of the best varmint rifles.
Most rimfire riflescopes today are waterproof, but that is not really a necessity for hunters. Squirrels will come out in inclement weather conditions but prefer to stay huddled in their dens and munch stored food, just like me.
If you’re hunting squirrels from a distance, a crosshairs is a better choice than a red dot on a rifle. The dot will cover up a lot of squirrels unless you can get close. If you hunt them with handguns and can get close, a red dot is a good choice for an aiming device.

TenPoint RangeMaster Pro Scope
Crossbow shooting systems are designed to handle the varying speeds of arrows from a crossbow in order to ensure they operate correctly. However, there are crossbow systems on the market designed to handle crossbows that shoot at very high speeds and with great accuracy.
One such system is the Scout Sportsman’s Scout Crossbow system. The Scout Sportsman’s Scout Crossbow System is designed to handle crossbows that shoot between 275 and 365 feet per second (fps) and is designed to be used with most aftermarket crossbow bolts. It consists of three duplex crosshairs and five dots calibrated for 20, 30, 40 and 50 yards.
With a 30mm tube diameter, the TZ-12 has a large enough lens to gather more light than competing cameras that are often 10% smaller. This allows for a brighter image on the target, and it also improves the target’s visibility in low light environments.
The B&L L2 series eyepiece has etched glass reticules and fully multi-coated 1.5 to 5 x optical systems that are designed to reduce the loss of light transmission. There are five intensity settings for two illuminated color views. The B&L L2 series eyepieces come with seven/eight inch rings.
Overwatch Straight Tube Scope
The Excalibur Overwatch Straight Tube Crossbow Scope is designed for hunters looking for an accurate and comfortable long range weapon to take on game. It features a 30mm tube and 32mm objective lens and works with your existing crossbow by providing adjustments in elevation and windage with 5 clicks.
The magnification adjusts automatically in a range of 2 to 5X, depending on the selected power setting, and is changed by setting the speed compensation ring for the velocity of the crossbow, from 300-475 fps, which ensures that the distance markers on the reticle are correct.
The optics use a combination of shock-resistant, waterproof, and fog-proof lenses that provide excellent light transmission and a crisp sight picture even in low light or bad weather. It comes with flip-up lens caps to protect the lenses and a limited lifetime warranty. It has 30mm scope rings so it’s easy to mount.
The Fast Point 100 Yard multi-reticle has a selector dial for red/green illumination, plus aim points starting at 20 yards and extending down vertically every 10 yards, ending at 100 yards.
